Why Winter is actually the best time to wear Colour

There’s a story a lot of us tell ourselves when the temperature drops: put away the colour, reach for the black, the grey, the safe. Winter becomes a kind of style hibernation — and I get it. It feels practical. It feels easier.
But here’s what I want you to know: winter is one of the most beautiful seasons to lean into colour. The muted light, the layered textures, the rich fabrics — they actually make colour look more elevated, more intentional, and more you than any other time of year.
So let’s talk about how to do it well.
Start with the colours that belong in winter
Not all colours feel right in every season — and that’s not about rules, it’s about harmony. In winter, the palette naturally shifts toward depth and richness. These are the shades that tend to sing:
One colour rule that changes everything
If you take nothing else from this, take this: colour works best when it’s connected to your personal colouring. Your skin tone, your eyes, your hair — they’re all part of the picture. When you wear a colour that’s in harmony with those, something clicks. People say you look “well” or “glowing,” and they can’t quite put their finger on why.
That’s colour doing its job.
When it’s off — even slightly — the colour can wear you instead of the other way around. You look tired. Washed out. Or just a little flat. And the worst part? You might blame the outfit when the only issue is the shade.
Colour analysis is one of the most powerful tools I use with clients.
When you know your season and your palette, getting dressed in winter becomes so much easier – because you stop second-guessing and start trusting.
How to add colour without overhauling your wardrobe
You don’t need to go all-in. Winter is a great time to introduce colour through accessories and layers — where you can try things without committing your whole look to one shade.
A coloured scarf over a neutral coat. A rich-toned knit under a classic blazer. A berry bag against a camel outfit. These small moves add personality and warmth without feeling like too much.
And yes — a beautiful silk or satin scarf is one of the easiest ways to bring colour close to your face, which is exactly where it has the most impact.
