Seven things to know about Texture.
When you think of fabric texture do you have a positive or negative reaction? Does it make you think of snuggly, soft, cosy fabrics or, scratchy annoying fabrics? Or perhaps something else?
Texture is the result of a specific fibre and the way it has been woven to create a textile. Some words to describe texture are: Loopy, fuzzy, furry, soft, shiny, dull, bulky, rough, crisp, smooth, and sheer.
Various textures have different weights, size, bulk, and light absorbing or reflecting properties and in turn impacts the way a garment drapes and how the garment will look on an individual when worn.
Here are a few styling tips regarding texture:
❶ All textured textiles and surfaces attract dirt.
❷ Textures adds interest to solid colour and monochromatic outfits.
❸ Texture makes Clear colours appear more muted.
❹ The bulkier a texture, the more it will add apparent bulk to where it is being worn.
❺ Textured surfaces can cause noise if they rub together i.e., between thighs.
❻ Many women who have muted colouring have a high sensitivity to texture and often find fabrics like wool and lace irritating and uncomfortable to wear.
❼ Texture can be used to set a mood. For example, soft and smooth textures evoke pleasant emotional responses.
